Death Cliff is one of the most thrilling viewpoints on the Ha Giang Loop, located high on the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass. If you’re chasing an unforgettable moment that makes your heart race, Death Cliff is exactly where you’ll find it.
In this guide, Lila Inn & Tour will take you through everything you need to know about this famous cliff: its location, history, stunning viewpoints, and practical tips for your journey.
What to know about Death Cliff?
Death Cliff, also known by many travelers as the “Skywalk of Ha Giang Loop,” is a narrow, cliff-edge viewpoint located on the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, about 150km from Ha Giang city. It’s a thrilling yet captivating stop, especially for adventure seekers who want to experience one of the most dramatic views in northern Vietnam.
Sitting at around 1,700 meters above sea level, the cliff extends outward from the rocky ridge known locally as the “Ma Pi Leng Dinosaur Spine.” This ledge was formed over time by the impact of weather and natural erosion, which caused rocks to break off from higher, forming a flat outcropping that now extends outward from the mountainside.

To reach the exact spot on Death Cliff, you’ll need to climb over steep, jagged karst rocks with no safety rails or barriers around you. It’s not an easy climb, but for many travelers, the effort is worthy because of the breathtaking scenery awaiting.
From this narrow ledge, you’re rewarded with a sweeping panorama of rugged limestone mountains, winding mountain roads hugging the cliffs, and the green Nho Que River flowing far below. That’s why so many visitors are willing to push past their fear of heights and make the climb, hoping to capture beautiful photos and take home a truly unforgettable memory of Ha Giang.

Because of its height and exposed terrain, the cliff can be dangerous. In October 2025, the local authorities temporarily closed the site to install additional safety railings for better protecting visitors.
When is the best time to explore Death Cliff?
Based on our local experience, the best time to explore Death Cliff is from September to April, which is Ha Giang’s dry season.
The weather during these months is usually comfortable, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. Skies are often clear and sunny, while early mornings and evenings bring a refreshing coolness. These conditions make riding through the mountain passes not only more enjoyable but also much safer.
This period also happens to be when Ha Giang looks its best. In September and October, golden rice terraces glow in the sunlight. November brings fields of pink and purple buckwheat flowers. Then in March and April, peach and plum blossoms begin to bloom, adding a soft, romantic touch to the highlands.

By contrast, July and August fall in the peak of the rainy season. While it’s still possible to ride the Ha Giang Loop during this time, we don’t recommend visiting Death Cliff then. The rocks become wet and slippery, and the climb can be far more dangerous than it looks.
How to get to Death Cliff?
To get to Death Cliff, you’ll first need to reach Ha Giang City. The most popular option is taking a night bus, which usually takes around 8–9 hours. They are modern sleeper buses, equipped with comfortable beds that allow you to rest pleasantly before reaching Ha Giang.

Lila can help arrange bus travel from anywhere in northern Vietnam. Simply contact us, and we’ll take care of the booking for you.
Then, move from Ha Giang City to Death Cliff.
From Ha Giang city, you will follow National Highway 4C, also known as the Happiness Road, toward Meo Vac. When you reach the Ma Pi Leng Pass area, continue past the Happiness Road Museum. Soon, you’ll see the Ma Pi Leng Gate. From the Ma Pi Leng Gate, it’s about 2–3 more kilometers to reach Death Cliff.
Along the route to Ma Pi Leng Pass, you have two main choices of transportation:
- Join a guided tour: You can choose to ride as a passenger with an Easy Rider – an experienced local driver who takes care of the journey for you. If you prefer more independence, you can drive your own motorbike while following a local guide (an International Driving Permit is required). For families or small groups who want a more relaxing trip, a private car tour is an ideal option.
- Rent a motorbike: This choice is for confident riders who want more freedom and adventure on the road. An International Driving Permit ( IDP) is also required.
Each way of exploring the Ha Giang Loop offers a different experience. From our local perspective, the Ha Giang Loop tour Easy Rider option is the safest and most relaxing choice, allowing you to enjoy the breathtaking mountain views without worrying about the road. On the other hand, if you prefer to conquer the Ha Giang Loop on your own, make sure to study the Ha Giang Loop map carefully for a smooth journey.

What are the top attractions to visit around Death Cliff?
If you have extra time, extend your journey beyond Death Cliff to visit several nearby attractions. These spots are perfect additions to make your Ha Giang adventure even more complete and memorable.
A Pao Dragon Cliff
About 1km from the Death Cliff, A Pao Dragon Cliff is a small but striking viewpoint, located right along Ma Pi Leng Pass. From the main road, you only need to walk about 100 meters to reach the rock, easier to explore than the Death Cliff. From here, the view opens up to layers of rugged mountains stretching into the distance, and on some mornings, you can even catch clouds drifting below. The spot was discovered by a local man named A Pao, so the rock has since been named after him.

Happiness Road Museum
About 4 km from Death Cliff, the Happiness Road Museum stands as a tribute to the thousands of young volunteers and local ethnic communities who worked tirelessly to construct the historic road connecting Ha Giang with Dong Van and Meo Vac. Today, visitors come not only to pay their respects, but also to take in sweeping views of the Nho Que River below. There are a few small stalls nearby where you can buy souvenirs or simply pause to rest before continuing your journey.

Located right along Ma Pi Leng Pass, it offers a clear look down into Tu San Canyon, where the emerald-green river winds through dramatic limestone cliffs.
Visitors usually pay 60,000 VND for a combo ticket that includes entrance and a drink, or 30,000 VND for entrance only. There’s also simple food like instant noodles if you’d like a quick bite while enjoying the view.

Tu San Canyon Boat Station
If you’d like to explore Tu San Canyon up close, head about 13 km further from Death Cliff to the Tu San Canyon Boat Station. This is where visitors board boats to cruise along the Nho Que River and enter the canyon from below.
You can book a boat steered by local guides and float gently along the Nho Que River toward the canyon. The ride usually costs only around 100,000–150,000 VND per person. As the boat gets closer, the view of the towering cliffs becomes more and more striking. Take a few photos if you like, but don’t forget to simply sit back and enjoy the view.

Beyond these highlights, you can always extend your journey to discover more of Ha Giang. If you’re drawn to its lush green valleys, Lung Ho Valley is a wonderful place to continue your adventure.
What are the most important tips for visiting Death Cliff?
To make your trip to Death Cliff safer, smoother, and more enjoyable, Lila has gathered a few practical tips based on our 8 years of experience guiding tours on the Ha Giang Loop.
- Check the weather first
For your safety, only visit on dry, sunny days. Avoid going after rain, as the rocks can become extremely slippery. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and don’t hesitate to change your plan if conditions aren’t ideal.
- Be honest about your health
If you’re afraid of heights, have heart issues, or don’t feel physically steady, this might not be the right stop for you. Your safety always comes first.
- Wear proper shoes
Choose shoes with a strong grip to help you stay stable while climbing over rocks and uneven surfaces. Slippery sandals or smooth soles are not recommended.
- Dress smart
Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move easily. Avoid long skirts or outfits with loose, dangling details that could get caught on rocks while climbing.
- Go with a local guide
If possible, explore with a local guide. They can show you the safest way up, help you navigate tricky sections, and make sure your experience is both exciting and secure.
