What to know about Dong Van Market?

Dong Van market lies in the heart of Dong Van Old Quarter, Dong Van Town,  about 150 km from Ha Giang City. With its unique setting, vibrant atmosphere, and rich cultural character, the market becomes one of the most iconic symbols of Ha Giang, offering a window into everyday life in Vietnam’s northern highlands.

The Dong Van market was built between 1925 and 1928. From the outside, it looks solid with rows of stalls arranged in a U-shaped layout. As you step closer, you’ll notice a distinctive blend of Vietnamese and Chinese design influences, highlighted by sturdy stone columns and carefully carved details.

Dong Van Market takes place every Sunday morning and serves as the main trading hub for the large Dong Van – Meo Vac area.  Before sunrise, people from various ethnic groups (Dao, Hmong, Tay, Nung, Giay, Lo Lo,…) travel from surrounding villages to gather here for trade and shopping. You will find a wide range of products, from fresh vegetables, poultry, and farm animals to clothing, daily necessities, and local dishes. Most items are home-grown or handmade, reflecting a self-sufficient lifestyle closely connected to nature.

More than a trading hub, the Dong Van market is a lively social and cultural gathering. As you walk through the stalls, you’ll see locals dressed in colorful traditional outfits, each group showcasing its own patterns and identity. Young people come to meet and connect, sometimes even finding their future partners here. Nearby, groups of men are drinking corn wine and chatting, while kids follow their parents, excited to get snacks. Altogether, it creates a vibrant, energetic scene among the quiet grandeur of the mountains.
