Let’s get started!

Lao Xa Village: Things to know before you go

Lao Xa is an ancient village hidden in the Sung La Valley of Dong Van, about 130 km from Ha Giang City. It’s a place that feels gently removed from the modern world, known not only for its fairy-tale scenery but also for the rich H’mong culture that has been passed down here for generations.

From a distance, Lao Xa looks like a quiet painting with endless limestone mountains embracing green valleys below. Standing out in the landscape are the traditional earthen houses with yin–yang tile roofs, built close together from lower to higher ground. Their timeless look gives the village an ancient charm.

As you get closer, you will be amazed by its poetic scenery. Along the path, traditional houses are made from compacted earth, giving them a warm feeling. On top, yin–yang tiles are softened by a touch of moss over time. And around each home, there are stone fences that are carefully stacked by hand without mortar, adding to the village’s raw and rustic character.

In almost every courtyard, you can find peach or plum trees. When spring comes, their blossoms burst into bloom, covering the village in soft shades of pink and white. That’s why walking through Lao Xa at that time of year feels more like stepping into a quiet, hidden fairy tale.

But beyond its captivating scenery, Lao Xa remains deeply rooted in H’mong culture. Most families make a living through farming and raising livestock, staying closely connected to the land.

One of the village’s most special traditions is its nearly 100-year-old silver crafting trade. This work requires great patience and skill, and each piece reflects the dedication of the artisan who made it. As you come to the village, you may see H’mong women dressed in their traditional clothing, adorned with silver necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings. During important occasions such as weddings and festivals, these silver pieces become meaningful and treasured gifts within the H’mong community.
