Chapters

Hidden deep in the forests of Ha Giang, A Boong Waterfall is one of those hidden gems that deserves far more attention. Away from the busy tourist stops, this small waterfall offers a quiet and relaxing escape, with clear, cool water surrounded by dense greenery.

If you’re looking to experience a softer, more peaceful side of the Ha Giang Loop waterfall trail beyond its dramatic mountain passes, A Boong is well worth seeking out.

In this guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about A Boong Waterfall, from how to get there to what makes it such a special stop on the Ha Giang Loop.

Let’s get started!

What is special about the A Boong Waterfall?

A Boong Waterfall (also known as Lung Pu Waterfall) is a pristine spot in Thuan Hoa Commune, Vi Xuyen, Ha Giang. Sitting along the route from Du Gia back to Ha Giang City, it’s an easy stop on the Ha Giang Loop, referred to as a small reward for travellers after hours on the road.

A Boong Waterfall
A Boong Waterfall: A serene oasis tucked away in the Ha Giang forests

Unlike the larger, more dramatic waterfalls in the region, A Boong maintains its raw and peaceful vibe. The waterfall is relatively small, with water gently cascading down a rocky cliff, surrounded by dense forest and the soothing sounds of nature. At the base, a natural pool filled with clear, cool water invites you to take a dip or just sit and relax by the edge.

Since the current is gentle and not too deep, even children can safely enjoy the water with proper flotation. Many visitors also like to set up small picnics nearby, sitting by the water, sharing food, and soaking in the quiet beauty of the surrounding forest.

Far from the crowds of more famous attractions, A Boong Waterfall is the kind of place where you can truly slow down, breathe deeply, and take in the landscape without distractions.

When is the best time to visit A Boong Waterfall?

For the best balance between scenery and safety, the ideal time to visit A Boong Waterfall is from September to April, the dry season in Ha Giang. During this time, the weather is more pleasant, and the roads along the Ha Giang Loop are easier to navigate. Although the water flow is gentler, the waterfall remains beautiful, with clear and refreshing water that’s perfect for a relaxing visit.

In contrast, from May to August, the region enters the rainy season. The waterfall becomes more powerful and lively thanks to heavier rainfall, and swimming can feel especially refreshing. However, increased rainfall also makes mountain roads more slippery and challenging, so it’s important to be well prepared and travel with extra caution.

How to get to A Boong Waterfall?

To get to A Boong Waterfall, you’ll first need to reach Ha Giang City.  Most travelers choose to take an overnight bus from other provinces, which usually takes about 8–9 hours.

Lila can help arrange bus travel from anywhere in northern Vietnam. Simply contact us, and we’ll take care of the booking for you.

Then, from Ha Giang City, you can choose between two routes to reach A Boong Waterfall.

Lila Inn&Tours
Lila Inn&Tour: Hostel in Ha Giang City

The shorter option is to follow QL34 toward Thuan Hoa in Vi Xuyen, which is about 37 km from the city. This route is straightforward and suitable if you want to visit the waterfall directly.

Alternatively, if you’re doing the Ha Giang Loop, A Boong will appear near the end of your journey, on the way back from Du Gia to Ha Giang City. Along this route, you’ll pass through most of the province’s famous districts, including Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, and Meo Vac, before returning to Thuan Hoa, Vi  Xuyen, where the waterfall is located.

Once you reach Thuan Hoa Commune, continue along the main road for a short distance and keep an eye out for the km 9–km 10 markers. From there, you’ll walk about 300 meters into the forest to reach A Boong Waterfall. The path is short and partly paved, making it relatively easy to follow.

To enjoy the Ha Giang Loop, you have two main transportation options. The first is to join a guided tour, with the most popular choice being an Easy Rider experience, where you ride as a passenger while a skilled local driver takes care of everything.

If you prefer more freedom, go with the second option: renting a motorbike. Self-driving offers a more adventurous and flexible experience, but it also requires strong riding skills and an International Driving Permit. Top experience to explore the Boong Waterfall

To make your trip safer, smoother, and more enjoyable, here are a few practical tips based on Lila’s years of guiding experience on the Ha Giang Loop:

  • Go with a local guide: The trail is not clearly marked, so having a local guide helps you stay on the right path and explore safely.
  • Pack the essentials: Bring swimwear, insect repellent, sunscreen, and anything you may need for a light picnic.
  • Avoid rainy days: The trail can become slippery, and water conditions are less predictable after heavy rain.
  • Check the water depth: Always test the depth before jumping in, as some areas may be shallow or have hidden rocks.
  • Watch for slippery rocks: Mossy surfaces around the waterfall can be very slick, so move carefully.
  • Do not swim alone: Even calm water can be unpredictable, so it is safer to go with a friend.
  • Use a waterproof bag: Protect your phone and valuables, especially if you plan to swim or get close to the water.
  • Respect nature: Avoid using soap or shampoo in the water, and always take your trash with you.
