Ban Gioc Waterfall: Vietnam’s most powerful and scenic natural wonder

Ban Gioc Waterfall

Chapters

Ban Gioc Waterfall stands as one of the most impressive natural sights in Southeast Asia, located right on the border between Vietnam and China. With its wide cascades, powerful streams, and striking turquoise water, it has become a true symbol of Cao Bang Province, drawing thousands of travelers each year to admire its beauty.

If you’re planning a visit to Ban Gioc Waterfall, this guide covers everything you need to know: from its location and history to its landscapes and practical travel tips.

Let’s get started!

What makes Ban Gioc Waterfall special?

Ban Gioc waterfall is located in Dam Thuy Commune, Trung Khanh District of Cao Bang Province. Stretching across the border between Vietnam and China, it is not only the largest natural waterfall in Southeast Asia but also one of the most impressive cross-border waterfalls in the world.

Ban Gioc Waterfall is made up of two sections, the main waterfall and the secondary waterfall.

The main waterfall is the larger and more powerful section, stretching across the Vietnam-China border. It stands over 60 meters tall, with its main drop extending around 30 meters and spreading nearly 200 meters wide. Instead of falling straight down, the water moves across three limestone tiers, creating foamy streams that form a wide, continuous curtain.

Meanwhile, the secondary waterfall is located on the left side and lies entirely within Vietnamese territory. Compared to the main falls, it is smaller and has a gentler flow. However, its water drops directly from a higher level, giving it a distinct beauty that contrasts nicely with the layered cascades of the main waterfall.

As you get closer, the experience becomes more immersive. You can hear the steady roar of the water, feel the cool mist on your skin, and watch it flow over the rocks in soft, natural streams. For a closer view, visitors can take a bamboo raft to the base of the falls and feel the powerful streams crashing down right in front of them. There is also a small staircase being developed, allowing visitors to get closer to the upper area of the main waterfall and enjoy a more panoramic view.

Besides its impressive natural beauty, Ban Gioc Waterfall also holds important historical and cultural significance. The border between Vietnam and China is officially divided through the center of the main waterfall and along the middle of the river below. Because of this unique location, Ban Gioc has become a symbol of friendship and connection between the two countries.

When is the best time to explore Ban Gioc Waterfall?

Each season offers a different experience at Ban Gioc Waterfall, but September to October is often considered the most beautiful time to visit.

  • From May to August

During these months, the waterfall becomes more powerful, with strong flows, white foam, and mist creating a dramatic and majestic scene. This is the best time to see the falls at their most powerful, but remember that roads can be slippery due to the rainy weather.

  • From September to October

This is the ideal time to visit. The weather becomes cooler and drier, while the waterfall remains full after the rainy season. At the same time, the surrounding rice fields turn golden, creating some of the most beautiful landscapes in Cao Bang. In early October, visitors may also have the chance to experience the Ban Gioc Waterfall Festival and enjoy local cultural activities.

  • From November to March

This is the dry season, the waterfall flows more gently, and the surroundings feel quieter. December and January are usually the driest months, as the water flow partly depends on the operating schedule of a nearby hydroelectric plant. If you visit during this period, it’s best to come in the afternoon, usually after 2–3 PM, when the waterfall tends to have a stronger flow.
